5 Holy GRAIL and Holy FAIL’s: Foundation

5 Holy Grail and Holy Fail’s Foundation

I’ve been testing a lot of foundations lately, some I absolutely LOVE, some not so much. Here’s a breakdown on some of my current faves, and not so much. Here’s the quick 5: Foundation Review Breakdown.

Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation

Result: GRAIL

$50 CAD for 1.01oz at Ulta.com

Tarte Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation

The claims:

-provides buildable, longwear coverage in a skin-smoothing, weightless gel

-collagen and hyaluronic acid-packed

-plumps skin and refines pores without creasing, caking or fading for 12 hours

The Findings:

I’ve been on the fence with this one majorly. Some days I absolutely hate it, I find that it tends to break down very easily on my nose, forehead and cheeks. Some days, I love the look of it as it does not tend to enhance the texture on my cheeks and large pores. So, I started testing different primers with it and realized that made ALL of the difference.

The only primers that worked for me with this foundation were the Hourglass Mineral Veil and just using Mac Fix +. I tried using several others, Mac Prep and Prime, Benefit Poreprofessional, Nude by Nature primer, the ordinary primer and they all had the same result, it either started breaking up the foundation immediately on application, or it didn’t last very long throughout the day at all before sliding off of my face.

My only complaint at this time is that this foundation has a Doe foot applicator, just like the original tarte shape tape and it makes it very difficult to get product out when you start to reach the bottom of the jar. The applicator doesn’t fit to the bottom, and you find that you are trying to swirl and scrape the sides.

This has a very light-medium finish, which I really enjoy on hot days or when I don’t want to be wearing very much makeup. I really wish that they would have launched this foundation with a better shade range and it would have had a fairer shot at being reviewed. As much as I love Tarte, I feel like they doomed this foundation from the start.

Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Matte Foundation

Result: FAIL

$50 CAD for 1.01oz at Ulta.comTarte Shape Tape Matte Foundation

The Claims:

-rich, airbrushed full coverage

-smooths over pores and imperfections

-dries to flawless matte finish

-absorbs oil and shine, while leaving skin crease less

-Free of flakiness or cakiness and helps improve skin health

The findings:

Ok, so even with all of the controversy surrounding this foundation, I try and give it a fair shot. WTF!!! This was such a colossal fail. I wasted my money. This made me feel sad and regretful.

So yes, its full coverage, I will give it that. Try and put another layer on and immediately, it starts sliding around and breaking up. It’s so frustrating. I tried it with every primer I own and no primer at all and ummmm… its terrible. I have never experienced anything so bad.

For application, I tried both a Beauty Blender and my Sigma F80 Kabuki brush. These are definitely my ride or die products. Neither of these could make the application of this go on any better.

For the colour, I bought the Light Sand, which I have in the rest of my foundations, and ummmm….its so light, I don’t think that Tarte should name the colours the same thing if they are going to be totally different shades. WTF! They should have came up with new names so that they weren’t so darn misleading!

If you want to look like you have alligator skin, or enjoy the look of extreme dryness or rosacea, this is the foundation for you. My opinion, save your money and hard pass on this one.

YSL All Hours Full Coverage Matte Foundation

Result: GRAIL

$65 for 0.84oz at Sephora.caYSL All Hours Foundation

The Claims:

-24 hour, full coverage

-Blurs pores and fine lines

-Uninterrupted, flawless, all-day wear

The Findings:

I was bored at ATL airport and decided to walk around. I was looking around in all of the stores and came across this foundation. Honestly, I feel like I bought it out of boredom, for no other good reason. The sales associate wasn’t even very helpful (I doubt that they sell much at an airport-lots of looky-loos), so I am not even entirely sure on my thought process as to why I purchased it.

I have combination skin with large pores and texture, so I tend to shy away from the matte foundations as they usually do not yield desirable results on my skin. HELLO, this is absolutely gorgeous. It blends like a dream, it is super easy to apply, I love using a sponge for this one.

It’s lasting power you ask? Well I recently had to work at a trade show in Las Vegas, where you are dehydrated and exhausted. I would apply my makeup at 7:00AM, work the trade show, go to customer dinners and return to my room around 11:00PM. This foundation lasted ALL day and still looked as flawless as it did when I first applied it. I was in awe.

If you are looking for a full coverage foundation that has a skin like matte texture, this is for you.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea

Result: GRAIL

$51 for 1oz at Sephora.caTarte Rainforest of the Sea Foundation

The Claims:

-Hydrating boosting coverage

-12 hour water foundation

-full coverage, masks redness, dark spots and uneven skin tone

-smooth, soft, radiant finish

The Findings:

I think that I bought this because I like the name of it, I’m not going to lie, a rainforest of the sea??? What does that even mean? I want to go there!

This has a water like texture and is applied with a dropper. I like to drop it directly on my skin and blend with a beauty blender. I find that this has the most natural skin like texture with coverage that is medium.

This makes my skin look so dewy and healthy. I’ve tried several primers with it and DAMN, I used the Becca First Light Priming Filter and omg, I glowed. This is thebomb.com. I am obsessed.

I am on my third bottle of this now, and I like that you are able to get every last drop out of this foundation, so I don’t feel like I am wasting a ton.

Nude by Nature

Result: FAIL

$36 for 1oz at nudebynature.caNude by Nature Foundation

The Claims:

-Even, flawless complexion

-Looks and feels like second skin

-Long wearing

The Findings:

So this brand is a new release in Canada to Shopper’s Drug Mart. The sales associate convinced me that it was fabulous. I had to try it. First of, getting a colour match was difficult, they do not have a very diverse shade range and finding one with the right undertones proved to be a bit of a challenge.

The packaging on this foundation is interesting and unique. It was different than any other packaging that I had seen, so that is why I decided to go with it.

In my first pass, there were areas that I wasn’t liking the coverage on, so I decided to go over those areas again. Unfortunately, when I applied more product, the it slid all of the foundation in that area off my face. I couldn’t fix it. I was so disappointed.

I decided to give it a shot with with the nude by nature primer. It didn’t fare any better.

So far, this is a big HOLY FAIL from me.

Have you tried it any of my fails and it worked? Fill me in on your secret!
